112th Traffic Safety Corridor |
|
The 112th Traffic Safety Corridor extends 3.6 miles on NE 112th Avenue and includes Chkalov Drive and Gher Road. The project is spearheaded by a partnership of community members, businesses and public agencies who work together to develop low-cost, near-term solutions for improving traffic safety through enforcement, engineering and education during the next two years.
According to WSDOT, there were 534 collisions on the 3.6-mile stretch of road between November 2005 and October 2008. Eleven of these collisions involved fatal or serious injuries and 44 were alcohol related.
Leading collision types include:
1. Rearend
2. Angle
3. Driveway related
Leading contributing causes include:
1. Failing to yield
2. Following too closely
3. Exceeding safe speed

Here is a list of the many low-cost, near-term engineering improvements on NE 112th that are scheduled during the next year. Committee members made reccomendations based on examination of the collision data on the corridor.
Winter/Spring 2010
Fall/Winter 2010-11
Winter/Spring 2010
- Coxley/Gher Rd intersection – Island upgrade and replacement and sight distance improvements.
- RS500/Gher Rd interchange – Upgrade lane striping and add object marker on traffic islands.
- NE 51st St/112th Ave intersection – Length the southbound left turn pocket and modify signal operation for left turns. Relocate the bus stop on 112th Ave out of the travel lanes. Install count down pedestrian signal heads.
- NE 112th Ave between NE 51 Cr and SR 500 – upgrade pavement.
- NE 112th Ave between NE 49th St and SR 500/Gher Rd – Coordinate signals.
- Chkalov mid block between NE 2nd St and I-205 off-ramp signal – install short median.
- Mill Plain/Chkalov – Modify striping of northbound to westbound left turn striping to reduce queue length.
- Chkalov/Fred Myers traffic signal – Upgrade left turn signal to protected (green arrow) phasing.
- McGillivray/Chkalov to 112th/49th St – interconnect traffic signals that they can operated as coordinated signals.
- NE 112th Ave between Chkalov and NE 7th St – Install radar sign.
- NE 18th/18th St Intersection – Widen and upgrade intersection as part of the NE 18th St widening project.
Fall/Winter 2010-11
- Complete engineering action plan as necessary and as funding allows.
